Cheap Weekend Getaways From Greenville, SC: Eight Drives Under 3 Hours With the Real Total

Eight weekend trips from the Upstate, each priced for two people and two nights: the gas from Greer, the cheapest well-reviewed room, and a packed cooler. Totals run from $169.42 to $243.87, with the free stops that make each one worth the drive.

Most weekend-getaway lists for the Upstate stop at the pretty part. Asheville has breweries, Helen looks like Bavaria, and what the weekend costs is left for you to find out at checkout.

So we did the checkout part first. For eight towns within three hours of Greer, we priced the same two nights for two people: gas there and back, the cheapest room with real reviews behind it, and a cooler packed at the Harris Teeter on Old Spartanburg Road. Restaurants are left out on purpose, because that is the line you control.

How we priced it

The room is the cheapest nightly rate Google Hotels listed on October 21, 2026 that was rated 4.0 or higher by at least 100 guests. That rule skips the $35 motel rated 3.0, so the number is the cheapest room most people would actually book, not the cheapest one on the page. The tool we used returned the same rate whatever dates we asked for, so these are listed rates, not quotes for a specific weekend; taxes and fees can add to them at checkout, and your dates will price differently.

The gas is the round-trip driving distance from Greer, divided by 25 miles per gallon, times AAA’s South Carolina average for regular, $3.833 on October 21. If you fill up across the line, you will likely do a little better: AAA had North Carolina at $3.571 and Georgia at $3.716 the same day. Drive times are routing estimates with no traffic, and the mountain roads into Bryson City, Dahlonega and Blowing Rock run slower than any map says.

The cooler is one cart for two people’s lunches and snacks for the weekend, $20.61 at regular price: a loaf of bread, a pack of shaved deli turkey, ten slices of American cheese, a jar of peanut butter, yellow mustard, a 3-pound bag of apples, 2 pounds of bananas, and a bag of chips. Fill water jugs at home. If you want a dinner out, add it, because that number is yours to set.

Brevard, NC: the waterfall weekend, $243.87

Brevard is the priciest weekend here because of the room. Google showed Ash Grove Mountain Cabins & Camping at $38, but the Ash Grove rates page lists its cabins at $150 to $200 a night plus a cleaning fee, so the $38 is not a room price and we dropped it. The cheapest well-reviewed room left was the Comfort Inn & Suites Brevard North at $103.84 a night, rated 4.2 by 491 guests.

The free half of the weekend is the forest. Looking Glass Falls drops 60 feet into a pool you can see from the road on US 276, in Pisgah National Forest, about 9 miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is a small roadside lot, and the National Park Service listing mentions no fee. Get there early on a fall weekend, because that lot fills.

Hendersonville, NC: the shortest drive, $169.42

At under an hour from Greer, Hendersonville is close enough to decide on over lunch Friday. The room was the Quality Inn & Suites Hendersonville - Flat Rock at $68.58 a night, rated 4.2 by 631 guests.

Walk the downtown Main Street, then drive a few minutes south to Flat Rock and the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. The National Park Service says plainly that the park does not charge an entrance fee, so the grounds and trails cost nothing. The fees page does not list a house-tour price, so call the park at 828-693-4178 if you want to go inside.

Asheville, NC: the big town, still under $200 at $181.66

The cheapest well-reviewed room Google listed in Asheville was the Country Inn & Suites by Radisson near the outlet mall at $71.02 a night, rated 4.2 by 834 guests. That is cheaper than a lot of people expect for Asheville, and it is why the total stays under $200.

The free anchor is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which runs right past the city. The Park Service’s own words: “No fee is charged to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway.” Sections close for weather and repairs, so check the Parkway’s road status on nps.gov before you plan a drive. Our free Blue Ridge Parkway drive has more on how to use it.

Columbia, SC: a free national park and a free State House tour, $229.38

Columbia is the most expensive weekend on this list, because the cheapest room with a 4.0 rating and real reviews was the DoubleTree by Hilton at $88.73 a night. Several cheaper rooms showed up, but none had both a 4.0 rating and at least 100 reviews.

What Columbia has going for it is two big free things. Congaree National Park, southeast of downtown, states it directly: “Entrance to Congaree National Park is free.” Its boardwalk loop is the easy way in. Our Congaree day trip covers it in detail.

Back downtown, the South Carolina State House offers guided tours free of charge, including Saturday times. The schedule on that page is older, so call the tour desk at (803) 734-2430 before you count on a time.

Helen, GA: the Alpine town, $192.60

Helen’s whole downtown is built to look like a Bavarian village, and walking it costs nothing. The room was the Days Inn by Wyndham Helen at $68.76 a night, rated 4.4 by 455 guests.

Just up the road, Unicoi State Park is the outdoor half of the weekend. Georgia state parks charge for parking, not entry: $10 per vehicle for a daily ParkPass, or $70 for a year if you will be back. That $10 is not in the total above, so add it if you go.

Bryson City, NC: the Smokies on a $5 tag, $174.94

The cheapest well-reviewed room for Bryson City was actually in nearby Cherokee: the Econo Lodge Cherokee Near Island Park at $59.24 a night, rated 4.2 by 677 guests. If you want to sleep in Bryson City itself, the Sleep Inn showed $81.27.

Bryson City sits at the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which has no entrance fee. It does require a parking tag for any vehicle parked longer than 15 minutes: $5 for a day or $15 for a week. Budget $10 for a two-day weekend, which is not in the total above. The Park Service says the tags are not required on its free entrance days.

Dahlonega, GA: the gold-rush square, $191.25

Dahlonega is the longest drive here at close to three hours, and the room was the Days Inn by Wyndham Dahlonega University Area at $63.73 a night, rated 4.1 by 946 guests.

The town square is the free part and the reason to go, with shops and old storefronts around a courthouse in the middle. That old courthouse is now the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site, and it is not free: adults are $10.00 and seniors $7.50. Walking around it is.

Blowing Rock, NC: the high-country weekend, $208.63

Blowing Rock sits right on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which means the scenery is free the moment you arrive. The room was the Holiday Inn Express Blowing Rock South at $76.01 a night, rated 4.0 by 896 guests.

Two Parkway stops close to town cost nothing to visit: Price Lake, a few miles west on the Parkway, and Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, where the Park Service says the estate’s carriage trails and family cemetery “are all open to the curious.” Fall and winter up here are colder than the Upstate by a wide margin, so pack layers.

Where to stay for less

The rooms above are the floor we found, not the only choice. A few things that changed the price in our search:

The honest caveats

Every price here is dated. Room rates are what Google Hotels listed on October 21, 2026, not quotes for a specific weekend, and hotel rates move by the day. Gas assumes 25 miles per gallon and the South Carolina average; a truck or a heavy foot costs more. The totals leave out restaurants, park parking where it applies, and souvenirs, and they are for two people sharing one room. If you want a slower day closer to home, an afternoon on a courthouse square costs even less, and when you are ready for a longer drive, here is how to do downtown Savannah for free.

Which of these towns would you drive to first, and what is the free stop there we should add?

Rooms: the nightly rate Google Hotels listed (via hotel-goat) on October 21, 2026, for two adults, before any taxes and fees Google did not show. The tool returned the same rate whatever dates we asked for, so it is not a quote for any specific weekend. Room rule: cheapest rate rated 4.0 or better with at least 100 reviews; a $38 Brevard listing that was not a room price was dropped. Drive miles and times: OSRM routing from Greer, SC, checked October 21, 2026. Gas: AAA South Carolina regular average $3.833 on October 21, 2026 at 25 mpg. Cooler: regular shelf prices at Harris Teeter Hudson Corners, Greer, SC, October 21, 2026. Fees: nps.gov, gastateparks.org, scstatehouse.gov, checked October 21, 2026.
