Free Things Worth Walking To in Downtown Savannah

Savannah's whole historic district is basically a free outdoor museum: oak-lined squares, a famous fountain, and a cathedral, all walkable. Here is the loop, with the map and walking times.

Free Things Worth Walking To in Downtown Savannah

Savannah makes a lot of its money on tours: the trolleys, the ghost walks, the grand house museums. They are fun, but here is the secret the brochures bury. The thing Savannah is actually famous for, those oak-canopied squares dripping with Spanish moss, is free. The whole historic district is laid out as a walkable grid of little parks, and wandering it costs nothing. Here is the free loop, anchored on Forsyth Park, with the real walking times.

The free walk, in one loop

Everything below is measured from Forsyth Park, the big green anchor at the south end of the historic district.

  1. Forsyth Park (you are here). Thirty acres of live oaks, walking paths, and open lawn, and at the north end, the white two-tier fountain in the photo above, one of the most photographed spots in the South. All free. Map and details
  2. Monterey Square (about 10 minutes north). One of Savannah’s most beautiful squares, ringed by historic homes and shaded by old oaks. Free to sit and wander. Map and details
  3. Madison Square (about 14 minutes). Another of the city’s 22 squares, quiet and green, a good place to rest your feet between stops. Map and details
  4. The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist (about 16 minutes). The twin-spired cathedral on Lafayette Square, with one of the most jaw-dropping interiors in the country. Stepping inside to look is free; check the cathedral’s visitor page for Mass times and the hours self-guided visitors are welcome. Map and details

That is a genuine free afternoon: a famous park and fountain, two of the prettiest squares in America, and a cathedral, all on foot.

What it actually costs

Parking, and that is genuinely it. The historic district is flat and compact, built for walking, so park once and stroll. Every square, the park, the fountain, and the cathedral are free to walk up to and free to walk into. Savannah is one of the best free walking cities in the country once you stop paying for tours of what you can simply walk to yourself.

Two free bonuses

When you reach the river, River Street along the water is free to walk, all cobblestones and old cotton warehouses. And the real magic of Savannah is just connecting the dots between its 22 squares, each its own little free park with a monument and a canopy of oaks. Pick a direction and string them together.

Savannah will happily sell you a tour. It will also, if you just walk, hand you its best self for the price of parking.

What is your favorite free thing to do in a city everyone assumes is expensive?

Make it a better free walk

Savannah’s free value is in the squares. Do not rush them like checklist stops. Pick a few, sit down, and let the walk breathe.

The cost traps are parking, heat, and buying a drink every time you want shade. Bring water, walk early or late, and check Visit Savannah for square-by-square event closures and parking guidance before you go.

Internal next step: A Free Day Outside: Trails, Parks, and Fishing Spots pairs well with a Savannah morning if you want the second half of the day to stay cheap.
