Cheap Romantic Getaways in the NC Mountains: Four Weekends for Two Under $200, and Three That Miss
Seven North Carolina mountain towns priced for a couple's weekend from Greer, SC (room rates Google Hotels listed on October 21, 2026): gas, two nights in the cheapest well-reviewed room, and a $14.25 dinner in. Four came in under $200, from $153.63 near Maggie Valley; Blowing Rock, Brevard and Highlands did not.
“Under $200” is the promise on a lot of romantic-getaway lists, and it usually leaves something out: the gas, the second night, or the dinner. We wanted to know which North Carolina mountain towns can actually do a two-night weekend for two from the Upstate for less than $200 before tax.
We priced the same two-night weekend in seven towns. Each total is the gas from Greer and back, two nights in the cheapest room rated 4.0 or better by at least 100 guests, and one dinner cooked in instead of eaten out. Four towns made it. Three did not, and we kept them in so the $200 claim is checkable.
Seven towns, cheapest weekend first
| Town | Drive from Greer | Gas, round trip | Two nights | Dinner in | Weekend total | Under $200? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maggie Valley / Waynesville | 83 mi, about 1 hr 50 min | $25.36 | $114.02 | $14.25 | $153.63 | Yes |
| Hendersonville / Flat Rock | 38 mi, about 1 hr | $11.65 | $137.16 | $14.25 | $163.06 | Yes |
| Bryson City / Cherokee | 117 mi, about 2 hr 35 min | $35.85 | $118.48 | $14.25 | $168.58 | Yes |
| Black Mountain | 70 mi, about 1 hr 40 min | $21.34 | $139.90 | $14.25 | $175.49 | Yes |
| Blowing Rock | 117 mi, about 2 hr 55 min | $36.00 | $152.02 | $14.25 | $202.27 | No |
| Brevard | 51 mi, about 1 hr 20 min | $15.58 | $202.92 | $14.25 | $232.75 | No |
| Highlands / Cashiers | 85 mi, about 2 hr 5 min | $26.10 | $259.46 | $14.25 | $299.81 | No |
Hotel taxes and fees are not in these totals, so the closer a town sits to $200, the more likely it lands over the line at checkout. Blowing Rock misses by $2.27 before tax.
What is in the total
The room is the cheapest nightly rate Google Hotels showed on October 21 from a place rated 4.0 or higher by at least 100 guests. We searched a mid-November weekend, but Google returned the same rates for other dates we tried, so treat them as the rates listed that day and search your own dates before you book. We left out tent sites and conference centers that slipped into the hotel results, because neither is the weekend anyone means by “romantic getaway.” Rates are before taxes and fees.
The gas is the round-trip driving distance from Greer at 25 miles per gallon and the AAA South Carolina average for regular, $3.833 a gallon on October 21.
The dinner is one night cooked in: a 16-ounce box of spaghetti ($1.39), a 23-ounce jar of marinara ($2.99), a pound of 80% lean ground beef ($5.29), a garlic bread loaf ($2.39) and a milk chocolate bar for dessert ($2.19). That is $14.25 at regular shelf price at the Harris Teeter on Old Spartanburg Road in Greer. It needs a stove or at least a hot plate, and many motel rooms do not have one, so ask about a kitchenette when you book. The other meals are up to you and are not in the total.
Maggie Valley / Waynesville: the cheapest weekend, $153.63
The cheapest well-reviewed room in the Waynesville search was actually in Maggie Valley, next door: the Quality Inn & Suites Maggie Valley - Cherokee Area at $57.01 a night, rated 4.1 by 642 guests. For 35 cents more a night, The Valley Inn was $57.36, rated 4.7 by 225 guests. That one makes the weekend $154.33. The gas is figured to Waynesville.
The free plan is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which the Park Service says has no entrance fee or pass. Waterrock Knob, at milepost 451.2, has a big parking lot and a trail of about a mile round trip with 460 feet of climb to a 6,273-foot summit. The Park Service notes that fog is common there, and the Parkway closes sections in winter for ice and snow, so check its road status the week you go.
Hendersonville / Flat Rock: the short drive, $163.06
At an hour from Greer, you can leave after work Friday. The room was the Quality Inn & Suites Hendersonville - Flat Rock at $68.58 a night, rated 4.2 by 631 guests. If you want the higher rating, Mountain Inn & Suites in Flat Rock was $76.48, rated 4.5 by 905 guests, which makes the weekend $178.86.
The free afternoon is the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock. The Park Service lists no entrance fee, free house tours, and grounds open sunrise to sunset; the visitor center is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 to 5. Walk the grounds and trails, then go into Hendersonville for a stroll down Main Street.
Bryson City / Cherokee: the Smokies weekend, $168.58
The cheapest well-reviewed room in the Bryson City search was the Econo Lodge Cherokee Near Island Park, in Cherokee, at $59.24 a night, rated 4.2 by 677 guests. If you would rather sleep in Bryson City itself, Two Rivers Lodge and Cabins was $62.81 and the Relax Inn $64.40, both rated 4.2.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park has no entrance fee, but a car parked in the park for more than 15 minutes needs a parking tag: $5 for a day or $15 for a week. A two-day weekend adds $10, which is not in the total.
Black Mountain: $175.49
The room was the Quality Inn Black Mountain-Asheville East at $69.95 a night, rated 4.0 by 476 guests. Brookstone Lodge was $79.66 with a 4.1 from 1,281 guests, which puts the weekend at $194.91, still under $200 before tax but barely. We did not confirm a free stop in Black Mountain on an official page, so the Parkway is the free plan here too.
The three that missed $200
Blowing Rock, $202.27. The Holiday Inn Express Blowing Rock South was $76.01 a night, rated 4.0 by 896 guests. The room is mid-pack; the longer drive, $36.00 in gas, is what pushes it over. It is a $2.27 miss before tax, so if you find a slightly cheaper night, it can work.
Brevard, $232.75. The cheapest real room was Kanuga Inn & Lodging at $101.46 a night, rated 4.4 by 154 guests. Google showed a $38 rate in Brevard from Ash Grove Mountain Cabins & Camping, but the Ash Grove rates page lists its cabins at $150 to $200 a night plus a $75 to $100 cleaning fee. Two nights in a one-bedroom cabin there is about $375 before tax, so the $38 is not a cabin.
Highlands / Cashiers, $299.81. The cheapest well-reviewed room was the Hampton Inn & Suites Cashiers-Sapphire Valley at $129.73 a night. The next option in that search was Dillard House, in Dillard, Georgia, at $138.76.
Where to stay for less
- A cabin costs more than a motel. The Ash Grove cabins in Brevard start at $150 a night before cleaning. If the cabin is the point of the trip, budget closer to $400.
- The next town over is often cheaper. Maggie Valley beat Waynesville, Cherokee beat Bryson City, and Cashiers beat Highlands.
- Higher ratings did not cost much. The Valley Inn (4.7) was 35 cents a night more than the cheapest Maggie Valley pick, and Mountain Inn & Suites (4.5) was about $8 more than the cheapest Flat Rock room.
- Camping is cheaper still. Our campground versus hotel math shows when it wins, though late-fall nights in the mountains are cold.
The honest caveats
Rates are what Google Hotels listed on October 21, 2026, before taxes and fees, and they will be different for your dates. Gas assumes 25 miles per gallon at the South Carolina average. The total includes one dinner in and nothing else to eat. The Parkway closes sections for weather in late fall and winter, so check its road status before a sunset drive. For more on that drive, see our free Blue Ridge Parkway guide, and if you would rather stay closer to home, a drive-in movie night is a cheap date with no hotel at all. For more weekend math from the Upstate, our cheap weekend getaways from Greenville prices eight more drives.
Where was the best cheap weekend away the two of you ever had?
Rooms: Google Hotels via hotel-goat, checked October 21, 2026, two adults, nightly rate as listed before taxes and fees. We searched November 13-15, 2026, but Google returned the same rates for other dates, so these are listed rates, not a quote for that weekend. Room rule: cheapest rate rated 4.0 or better with at least 100 reviews; tent sites and conference centers left out. Cabin rates: ash-grove.com, checked October 21, 2026.
